Friends of Residents in Long Term Care and North Carolina State University’s School of Social Work, worked on a three-year grant (2021-2024) from NC CMP entitled Promoting Resident Well-Being in NC Nursing Home Resident Councils. The multi-year grant allowed us to create a Resident Council Manual and training videos to enhance the operation of nursing home Resident Councils in North Carolina.

Under the grant, we created training videos and a manual on different aspects of Resident Council development and operation. Due to the success of this work, one nursing home decided to include this material in its new resident orientation! During the Spring and Summer of 2023, copies of the manual were distributed to all nursing homes in North Carolina.

We would like to thank the Resident Councils and the long term care facilities that allowed us to pilot the manual. A special thank you to the residents that participated in the Design Team.

Here are the training videos produced under the grant:

Part 1: What Resident Councils Are and Why They’re So Important
Part 2: Choosing the Right Kind of Resident Council
Part 3: Setting Up a Resident Council: Step by Step
Part 4: Making Your Resident Council Work
Part 5: Additional Tips on Communication and Meeting Strategies
